Airport Industrial Park

One of the most underutilized and unplanned areas for industrial growth in Whatcom County is the airport industrial park.

There has been no new development in 40 years. There is tremendous potential for major industrial expansion and with a cooperative relationship with the Lummi Nation, this area can be primed and ready for job growth in a matter of years.

With access to I-5 and an international airport, there is no reason for this space to be underperforming. Building an airport industrial park will keep industrial ground productive. The added benefit is that it will maintain our industrial base and keep industrial zoning out of our neighborhoods.

Like the waterfront, the airport industrial park needs a master plan with a grand vision that consolidates wetlands and sets in motion the necessary infrastructure improvements to make this Free-Trade zone a high-performing asset for our economy.

Legal Purpose of the Port (RCW 53.04.010)

The Revised Code of Washington establishes ports to:

  • “Improve trade, commerce, and economic development” within the district.

  • Develop transportation, terminal, and other facilities to support commerce.

  • Promote industrial development and job creation.

  • Manage waterfront and maritime resources for public benefit.
